Most of us have several molars with deep grooves on the biting surface. These grooves tend to trap bacteria that cause tooth decay. The bristles of a tooth brush cannot always reach into these grooves properly.

Fissure sealant is a varnish that is placed over the fissures to create a smooth surface where bacteria can no longer harbour. Most parents will be advised to have fissure sealants placed over their kid’s teeth once the molars have fully erupted and they have deep grooves.
Fissure Sealants are a quick and cost efficient way to protect large molars, and to avoid more complicated treatment in the long run.

The procedure is quick and painless. The grooves are cleaned and a varnish is placed over them, which is set by a bright light. As a result, you don’t have to wait to eat and drink after the procedure. Depending on your diet and bite, the life span of fissure sealant can vary.
